Morecambe Townscape Heritage Initiative
The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is the Heritage Lottery Fund’s grant giving programme for the repair and regeneration of the historic environment in towns and cities throughout the UK.
Restoring Poulton’s traditional shop fronts to their former Victorian glory is one of the key aims of the THI. Not only does this improve the appearance of our shopping streets, it also boosts trade, encourages further investment and engenders a sense of pride in the area.Further to our Summer report, work to ‘The Shrimp Shop’ in Poulton Square was successfully completed in the Autumn.
The transformation saw the property being re-roofed and rendered, with a new shop front, windows and cast iron rainwater goods being installed, all substantially grant aided by the THI.
For more information on the Morecambe THI and grant availability, please contact Kate Smith, Project Administrator on (01524) 582337 or visit the Council’s website at http://www.lancaster.gov.uk and search for ‘THI’.

Name: Phil Coope
Position: Geographic Inspector for Morecambe, Lancashire Constabulary
Phil Coope is the new Inspector for Morecambe police taking over from Inspector Jill Townley, who has moved to a new post at Police Headquarters, from the start of January 2006. Phil has responsibility for policing resources covering Morecambe Heysham and Carnforth and is looking forward to the challenges that the area presents and to involve residents and partner agencies by working together to tackle quality of life issues.
Insp Phil Coope said: “It is an exciting an interesting time to be involved in the policing of Morecambe and I am keen to build on the tremendous work that has been done by my predecessor across a whole range of issues that impact on the daily lives of residents, in particular I am looking forward to working with those involved in Poulton Neighbourhood Management and The West End Partnership”.
Inspector Coope has previously worked as a Sergeant in Morecambe and Lancaster and more recently as the Geographic Inspector in Fleetwood and Lancaster.
Phil said: “Perhaps the most significant thing I have learned through my experience as a Geographic Inspector is the importance of working in partnership with residents and other agencies to achieve real change for the better. I intend to use my experience and the resources at my disposal to identify and tackle the problems that concern people most as well as providing a quality response to the demands of emergency and non- emergency calls”.
