Winter Gardens Celebration

The Friends of the Winter Gardens recently held a celebration evening for reaching their 20th birthday. The event was held at The Carleton and also marked the recent purchase of the building by the “Friends”.

There were celebrity guests in attendance including Wayne Hemingway and his family, and Gary Morecambe who came along with his daughter. Gary generously donated 24 signed copies of his book, “Life’s not Hollywood It’s Cricklewood” based on his father Eric Morecambe. The £240 raised from book sales was donated to the “Friends” appeal.

Steve Pendrill, a photographer from the Visitor newspaper, recently ran the Liverpool half marathon and raised over £600 which he has donated to the Friends of the Winter Gardens. Steve was also put to use on the evening by taking the photos to capture the occasion.

Blackpool cabaret act “Harris and Ford” provided some of the evenings great entertainment including a special tribute sketch of “Morecambe and Wise”. Live music and singing was provided by Ron Bull, who runs the picture framing shop on Yorkshire Street, accompanied by pianist David Tattersall.

Evelyn Archer, the Chairperson from the Friends of the Winter Gardens, said: “It was a wonderful evening, thank you for everyone who bought a ticket and gave us their support. I would also like to thank the entertainers and the staff from the Carleton who did a fantastic job hosting the event.”

Feeling Peckish

“Food 4 Thought” is trying to demonstrate to local residents that eating healthily is very enjoyable, and that anyone can make changes in the right direction.

Dawn Lambert, who works in “Food 4 Thought” and lives close by, said: “Everyone is assured of a warm welcome, and hopefully will be pleasantly surprised by what’s on offer”.

Sam Bebbington, another local resident and cafe worker, added: “We want to inspire people so they go out and really focus on good healthy food, at home, or wherever else they find it. Give us a try. You’ll find us behind the police station, opposite the Church. Look out for our blackboard.”

“Food 4 Thought” is part of Morecambe Healthy Living Centre, a lottery funded project.
